Frequently asked questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answers to the most important questions about our services, our projects and working with Protovation.

In which areas does Protovation operate?

Protovation operates in three core areas: technical chemistry (chemical apparatus engineering, electroplating, electrochemistry, sample analysis), energy engineering (heat pumps, hydrogen, heat exchangers, PV cells) and mechatronics & mechanical engineering (steel construction, sensor technology, control systems, piping).

Through our specialist network we additionally cover areas such as acoustics, electronics, building services and analytics.

What does Protovation do – and what does it not do?

We develop and build prototypes, pilot plants and special-purpose machines – from the first idea to the finished, tested product. We advise, plan, coordinate and assemble.

We are not an agency for funding applications and do not prepare these on behalf of others. Our focus is clearly on the technical development and construction of plants and machines.

Does Protovation also develop special-purpose plants to individual requirements?

Yes – this is our core business. We deliver tailor-made special-purpose plants to your technical requirements in the fields of energy engineering, technical chemistry and mechatronics.

Examples: alkaline electrolyser test rigs, electrochemical reduction plants, electroplating systems, educational machines for universities. Get in touch at office@protovation.at.

How does a development project at Protovation proceed?

Our process is divided into three phases: 1) Idea to concept – potential analysis, feasibility study, freedom-to-operate check and concept creation. 2) Concept to prototype – detailed planning, supplier coordination and assembly. 3) Prototype to market – structured testing, optimisation, MVP design and IP strategy.

What happens after the prototype is completed?

After commissioning, a structured testing phase follows according to defined protocols. Identified weak points are addressed during an optimisation phase.

We then support the MVP design: transforming the results into first sellable products, searching for OEM manufacturers and accompanying the necessary certification procedures.

How do we protect our innovation legally?

We support you in developing a suitable IP strategy (patents, utility models, etc.). Already in the concept phase we check the freedom to operate – i.e. whether your project can be implemented unhindered from a patent perspective.

How does the success-based billing work?

To share your development risk, we work on a partly success-based basis. Part of our remuneration is tied to the achievement of defined project goals.

This creates shared focus: we both benefit from realising the prototype quickly and successfully.

Can consulting services at Protovation be funded?

Yes. As a member of the Technology and Innovation Partners (TIP-NÖ), our clients can have a large share of their costs for working with us subsidised.

Talk to us – we will gladly inform you about the current options.

What is the heatXpump and who is it designed for?

The heatXpump is a universal heat pump for the university education sector. It weighs 40 kg, runs on extra-low voltage and allows all refrigeration-cycle processes to be observed at 5 measurement points – including an interactive LogP-H diagram.

What is the AEL alkaline electrolyser?

The AEL is a modular test rig for alkaline electrolysis at lab scale – with stack, tanks, pumps, sensors, gas dryer, gas separator and a complete safety concept. Various flow fields, electrode materials and membranes can be tested.

The stack is also available individually. Enquiries: office@protovation.at

What is behind the KAFKA project?

KAFKA is an FFG-funded three-year project: a reactor platform for the cascaded coupling of fermentation, electrochemistry and pyrolysis – with the goal of turning waste materials into high-value fine chemicals.

We are still looking for partner companies that would like to test their waste for upcycling potential. Get in touch now!

For whom is Protovation the right partner?

Our target audience is SMEs that put their capacity into day-to-day business and look for an experienced partner for technical development projects – as a consultant, developer or full project manager.

Typical starting situations: innovative ideas without in-house R&D resources, processes that need optimisation or a desire to develop new products.

How do I get in touch with Protovation?

By e-mail: office@protovation.at or by phone on +43 664 2393207. We are based in Lower Austria.

After you get in touch we will respond promptly to schedule an initial, no-obligation conversation.

Can I send Protovation a speculative application?

Yes, speculative applications are welcome at any time. Send your documents to office@protovation.at.

We are specifically looking for: process engineers, automation engineers, mechatronics engineers as well as fitters & commissioning technicians.
